A list was recently published that ranked hotel chains based on the numbers of bed bug complaints logged at the Bed Bug Registry, a site that allows individuals to post their run-in with bed bugs in hotels across the globe.
The complaints are not verified. Below is a list of the hotel chains with the most bed bug reports:
- Holiday Inn (732)
- Days Inn (560)
- Super 8 (550)
- Best Western (519)
- Hampton Inn (505)
- Comfort Inn (503)
- Marriott (395)
- Hilton (338)
- Motel 6 (314)
- Quality Inn (305)
While the list is a reminder that bed bugs are present in hotels and something all travelers should be aware of during a hotel stay, there are a lot of factors, not reflected in this list as simple as the numbers of locations for each chain (more locations might mean more bed bug encounters).
Choosing a chain based on this list does not necessarily mean that you are more or less at risk of seeing a bed bug, since bed bugs can show up just about anywhere at any time.
In some cases hotels may lack bed bug prevention and treatment protocols but even the most diligent hotels may have bed bug incidents because every new guest presents a new opportunity for bed bugs to be introduced since bed bugs are hitchhikers.
